A Sandwich A Day: Merguez Hero from Halal Sandwich Shop, Astoria
A new sandwich every day.
In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

Friendly and inviting, Hallal Sandwich Shop, located in the heart of Astoria's Steinway Steet-centric Muslim community, serves up everything from halal cheesesteaks to kofta kebab. But their merguez sandwich ($6.50) is where it's at. The sandwich comes on a baguette that's a bit soft, though not detrimentally so, and coated with a zesty, tomato-based sauce. A good amount of filling waits inside, the sausage sharing space with delicious olives and sautéed peppers and onions. The texture of the well-spiced, moist and smoky sausage contrasted perfectly with the softer vegetables. If you're in need of heat, drizzle on some of their sweet hot sauce; or, for something very Moroccan, get yours with French fries inside.
