Taco carts abound in Queens, and there are many to choose on Roosevelt Avenue alone, particularly on the 10 blocks between 74th and 84th Streets on Roosevelt Avenue. Conveniently, most carts are located close to subway exits, perfect for a late-night bite on the way home.
If you find yourself with a hankering for some street tacos while stepping off the 7 train at the 82nd Street stop, Mi Mexico Lindo is a great option. There is always a line, no matter what time of day or day of the week, at this small cart on the corner of Gleane Street and Roosevelt. Their many kinds of tacos include carnitas, carne enchilada, and oreja.
The shredded chunks of pork carnitas were appropriately crisp on the outside with a soft interior. Each taco, con todo, gets a spoonful of creamy avocado salsa, a sprinkling of crisp chopped onions, and cilantro. Topped with a thin and sharp salsa roja added a burst of garlic and heat to the meat.
The bright red, spice-rubbed pork of the carne enchilada was tender with a nice charred finish. When paired with bites of the roasted, lime-marinated jalapeños from the condiment area, the flavor of the meat gets a bit lost, but it's a good taco nonetheless.
Chunks of oreja, pig's ear, were so soft that the cartilage and fat almost melting on the tongue. Piled atop the steaming, griddled tortillas, the salty, fatty bits melded with the creamy, cold avocado and the crunchy onions into a great last bite of a perfect midnight snack.
At $2.00 each, there is no reason (aside from limited stomach space) not to try as many of the generous servings of meat as you can, of every variety that the friendly ladies behind the griddle have to offer.
