Sugar Rush: Cookies by the Pound at Patisserie Claude and Blackhound Bakery

Recently, I've been obsessed with ordering mini-cookies by the pound. I love the variety, and it satisfies my frequent indecision; this way, one can have a bit of everything by the pound without having to fully commit to just one type. My two go-to places for these cookies are Patisserie Claude in the West Village and Blackhound Bakery in the East Village.

Cookies at Patisserie Claude are $16 pound, and they sell eight types of mini-cookies. The mini-palmiers are the best of the bunch (and perhaps the best mini-palmiers in the city). Marzipan-fans will find plenty to love about the soft and chewy piped marzipan cookies with a cherry in the center. The two heart-shaped cookies are shortbread—one plain and tasting purely of butter and the other aggressively flavored with cinnamon and ground almonds.

Keep an eye out for three square shaped cookies. One is a hazelnut shortbread, and the other two offer a shortbread base topped with either pecans or a crunchy praline concoction. The final appears to be a bumpy orb, a meringue-like number, only with none of the chew, and all of the crumbly melt-in-your-mouth goodness coupled with crushed hazelnuts. Splendid!


Next we go to Blackhound Bakery where the cookies are $26 a pound—nearly double the price of Claude's. These cookies are more sophisticated, yes, but not necessarily better. There are a total of 27 different cookies. To give a sense of how much the cookies weigh: two of each cookie (making a total of 54 cookies), is exactly a pound: $26.

But some flavors are better than others. These include anything they do with puff pastry (hazelnut walnut fans, skinny cinnamon sugar sticks). Lacy, thin cookies are another highlight. Crunchy raspberry spirals, well-browned and buttery are excellent, as are coconut lace cookies, paired with hazelnut, pecan, or almond. All of the dark, spicy cookies are also worth an order, particularly the chocolate-black pepper cookies, ginger-lemon buttons, and gingerbread people. Ones to avoid include the sandwich heart (offered in strawberry and apricot), plain shortbread, lemon shortbread, vanilla heart, and pecan hearts—all of which are guilty of too much flour and too little butter.
