Ginger Spice Cake ($2.50) in the morning and Hazelnut Cake ($2.50) in the afternoon is how I like my visits to Duane Park Patisserie. You need to come early for the spice cake, a single batch baked in a small square pan, just nine tidy cuts for that day's lucky visitors. The cakes boast sticky tops and robust, earthy bodies, with freshly grated ginger.
Hazelnut cake is available all day and you'd be wise to pick one up on your morning trip. Finished with a quarter-inch of silky espresso buttercream, the cake is crumbly and sweet with ground and chopped hazelnuts serving as the foundation. The sliver of a cut is quite enough for this indulgent nibble, the crown of chocolate pretty though completely unnecessary. Plain and simple is often best.
