Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
It's too bad that, at many establishments in New York City, Mexican sandwiches, or tortas, are often overshadowed by the typical trifecta of burritos, tacos, and quesadillas. Luckily this isn't the case at Chavella's, a small Mexican restaurant in Prospect Heights. Their menu offers eight tortas, including such awesome options as the Chiles Rellenos (yes, that's a fried cheese-stuffed pepper on crusty bread) and the Chorizo con Papas(if you like starch on starch action, this spicy potato and sausage sandwich is for you).
My personal favorite is the Carne Enchilada ($7), with chunks of tender, spicy roasted pork and shreds of crunchy cabbage. The pork is topped with a substantial cilantro garnish and a nutty black bean spread. The final touch is a slather of salsa verde which keeps this giant sandwich supremely moist.
