A Sandwich A Day: Soppressata and Mozzarella at Paneantico

A Sandwich a Day

A new sandwich every day.

In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

The menu at Paneantico Bakery in Bay Ridge is not a good read for those prone to indecision—there are easily a hundred different sandwiches to choose from. But anything sounding Italian is a good bet, like this Hot Sopressata, Smoked Mozzarella, and Arugula ($11). The sandwich's ample meat and the peppery crunch of the arugula are nicely mellowed by the smoked mozz, softer than many cheeses of this type, with a creamy-sweet tone to balance the smokiness. It's all better with a shake or two of olive oil, which the place seems to know—they leave a oil-vinegar caddy on the table. Frankly, anything would taste great on their sturdy-crusted brick oven hero bread. Bakeries really do make good sandwich shops.
