Four and Twenty Blackbirds
With a menu that changes with the season, this Gowanus bakery is a pie shop that's packed at all hours of the day. There are flavors like Salted Carmel Apple and Maple Buttermilk, along with excellent double-crusted fruit pies that are not to be missed. The Cranberry-Sage pie could be a fine finish to your holiday dinner.
Les Canelés de Céline
The best canelés in the city, and killer financiers, both of which come in classic vanilla and a collection of flavors including rum, lime, chocolate chip, and praline. No actual storefront yet, but find them at the Columbus Circle Holiday Market until the end of the year.
The restaurant gets all the press, but the daytime bakery counter at Peels is where you find the gems. A crazy delicious 3-in-1 Pie (chocolate, coconut and banana), yellow cake with silky chocolate crème fraîche frosting, and St. Louis Sticky Gooey Cake are but a few of the many offerings.
Blue Smoke Bake Shop
At Blue Smoke Bake Shop, the Banana Cream Pie is as good a slice as you could imagine. A crust of crumbly, buttery salted graham cracker, along with vanilla and walnuts, is piled high with fresh bananas and a full-bodied vanilla custard. Fresh whipped cream covers the surface, along with toasted, crushed walnuts. It's $7.95 a slice, not cheap, and definitely not big enough for two to share. But worth every penny? Oh yes.
At Il Cantuccio, the bakery's namesake Prato-style biscotti are softer than traditional biscotti, The golden, chewy cookies are sold by the pound and made with ground pine nuts and almonds. Find them studded with dark chocolate chunks, dried figs, or my personal favorite, apricots. And don't leave without the Pancioc, a buttery sweet roll studded with melting dark chocolate nuggets.
