The chicken banh mi ($10, drink included) at Má Pêche is a good sandwich, but a bánh mì, it is not. There is a pile of julienned carrots, lightly pickled, though I found no evidence of the mint and daikon that were promised. But since when does a sandwich need a perfect pedigree to be enjoyable?
Even the chicken doesn't look like chicken. In a whimsical imitation of imitation meat, the chicken is ground up, delicately perfumed with lemon grass, and formed into a square patty that looks exactly like tofu. You could call it Mock Tofu, or perhaps Mock Chicken Bánh Mì, but when the sandwich christening is finished, I will happily call it lunch.
