When it's a blustery grey day in Midtown, what could be more perfect than an eggplant parmesan sandwich? I walked up and down 55th Street twice before finally finding Tuscany—to say that the storefront is unassuming is perhaps to exaggerate. The decor is not particularly inviting, either—think piles of straw baskets obscuring the front windows, random boxes of limes and fresh ginger, and a watermelon or two lurking in the fridge beneath the bottled sodas. The eggplant parm ($7.25) at Tuscany, however, is the real deal.
"This satisfies all my primal eggplant needs," said Carey as we sunk our fangs into this hefty sandwich. The eggplant here is battered thin, fried, and then wrapped around a cheesy core of ricotta and mozzarella. The whole thing is soused in sweet marinara, and placed on a substantial, sesame-seeded loaf. I transported it back to Serious Eats World Headquarters, and the sandwich was still warm when we unwrapped it from its foil cocoon. If that's not the best way to chase off winter chill, I don't know what is.
