Where To Buy Last-Minute Thanksgiving Pie in New York

Or, 'Solving Your Thanksgiving Pie-Lemma'

There are all sorts of fantastic bakeries in New York where you can pick up pie for your Thanksgiving table. (See this summer's pie finds, my pie honor roll, and our favorite pumpkin pies in NYC, just to start.)

But many of them require advance orders for Thanksgiving—and sometimes that just doesn't happen. Maybe you've been too busy brining your turkey to place a pie order. Maybe the person hosting the meal you're going to has only just asked you to bring dessert. Or maybe your own pie crust went horribly, horribly wrong.

Whatever the case, there are some times you just need a last minute pie. And luckily, these fine bakeries are here to help you out. So in lieu of a review this week (we know you're just thinking about Thanksgiving dessert, anyway), here's our guide to bakeries that have last-minute pies, available for walk-in purchase on Wednesday or Thursday. We've tasted them all, and every one is Serious Eats approved. Consider it our Thanksgiving gift to you.

Neighborhood-by-neighborhood breakdown, interactive map, and all the info—after the jump.

Note: While this information is accurate as of Monday 11/22, bakeries may well sell out. Call ahead!

Make My Cake: Homey, tasty pies with sweet but delicious fillings. Open 9am-3pm Thanksgiving. $13-15.

Upper East Side

Yura on Madison: With fantastic flaky crusts and never-too-sweet fillings, Yura's pies are probably my favorite in New York right now. Her blueberry pie is in my all-time Top 10, but for the season, the pumpkin pie is mighty fine, too. "We'll have a lot of pies!" they told us. Open Wednesday, closed Thanksgiving. $25.

Two Little Red Hens: They make a great chocolate pecan pie, a fine, fine apple pie, and an excellent harvest pie, filled with apples, pears, walnuts, and a hit of ginger. Lucky you are, Upper East Side. They're "baking around the clock"; first-come, first served. Open 7am-2pm on Thanksgiving. $29.

Citarella: Their pumpkin pie fared quite well in our taste test, I'm a fan of their apple pie, too, and they sell them by the stack. $11.95.

Bouchon Bakery: Not surprisingly, the bakery turns out visually stunning pies, though some (a flaky-crusted, cream-topped pecan) were better than others (an apple crumb that was about six parts crumb to one part apple). Some pies will be available for over-the-counter purchase; call ahead. Open 8am-1pm Thanksgiving day. Minis $6, 8" pies $30.

Hell's Kitchen / Midtown West

Little Pie Co.: We still love their signature sour cream apple pie—"Would eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner," said Maggie Hoffman. "And I have." They also gave us the best answer when we asked if they'd have last-minute pies available: "Come stand at the back door and see what you can get." A Thanksgiving adventure. Open 8am-2pm on Thanksgiving. $30.

Midtown East and Area

'wichcraft: The sandwich shop makes a great pecan pie (not too sweet, not too goopy), pumpkin, and a pretty crumb-heavy apple crumb. In store, while supplies last. Open Wednesday, closed Thanksgiving. $22.

Mitchel London Foods: They're a bit pricey, but these pies have nicely flaky crusts and classic fillings. "There will be lots and lots and lots of pies!" they promised us. Normal business hours Wednesday, closed Thanksgiving. 8" pies, $24-26.

Pies and pastries available for walk-in purchase. Open Wednesday, closed Thanksgiving. $36.

Gowanus / Park Slope

Four and Twenty Blackbirds: This Park Slope / Gowanus pie shop makes us extraordinarily happy, particularly the salted caramel apple pie, which will be available for Thanksgiving. (While we have to acknowledge one not-great experience with their pumpkin pie, we're hoping it's a one-off.) Whole pies sold Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 8am until they sell out. $32-38.

Martha's Country Bakery: We preferred the spice-laden pecan pie to the slightly oversweet and almond-laced apple, but either way, we were happy to buy pie from this charming bakery. Open 6am-11am on Thanksgiving; call ahead to check availability. $12.
