A Sandwich A Day: Prairie Breeze from Lucy's Whey

A Sandwich a Day

A new sandwich every day.

In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

There isn't usually much creativity in the realm of cheese nomenclature: Roquefort comes from Roquefort, France; Manchego is named after the Manchega sheep; each name fixed upon something solid, something traditional, whether it is a town, a process, or, well, a sheep.

Prairie Breeze Cheddar from Milton Creamery in Iowa, however, breaks with tradition. Any cheese with a name relating to wind seems to me to be rather vulnerable ("Break wind with Prairie Breeze!"), but this mild, naturally-colored cheddar is far better than any cheesy word-play. Stuck on bread spread with caramelized fig jam, Prairie Breeze makes a sandwich that will put the wind in your sails... in a good way.
