The Brunch Dish: Crispy Cabbage Salad at Balaboosta

The Brunch Dish

Brunch menus to do your weekend right.

Cabbage may be stealing the spotlight that brussel sprouts claimed last year—the unlikely vegetable darling du jour. And I don't need much convincing to order it, especially when it comes to dishes like Balaboosta's crispy cabbage salad ($14 with chicken, $9 without). It's found on both the lunch and brunch menus, and makes the perfect light start to the day—the kind of dish that fills you up, packs a variety of flavors and textures, and doesn't bust a gut. The combo of shredded savoy, romaine, crispy noodles and toasted sliced almonds makes for plenty of crunch, while cumin and a refreshing mint vinaigrette add depth and brightness. Chicken breast—juicy in a mild pesto-like rub—is optional, making the dish a vegan-friendly for those keeping track. Want to keep the drinks virtuous as well? Wash it down with limonana (homemade mint lemonade, $3.50) for good measure.
