I couldn't help but gave a little cheer when the current soft-serve flavors ($4.15) at Momofuku Milk Bar were introduced. Many flavors from past seasons were too inventive for my tastes (barbecue?), but this time around I was as happy as could be. Cereal milk soft serve is still available, offered as a twist with Dulce de Leche. But the Black Sesame and Pumpkin Cheesecake is what to return for. You can get that flavor combination twisted, but they're better served side by side—as the black sesame, tasting like a salt-kissed puree of the toasted seeds, overwhelms the comparatively lighter and gently-spiced pumpkin cheesecake when you capture both flavors in a spoonful. Black and orange: Halloween colors, very appropriate.
While you're there, make sure to get the Concord Grape Butter ($3). Packed in tiny glass jars, this butter is the newest to join their line-up of both sweet and savory butters which include kimchee, honey, and strawberry. Slathered on a warm baguette, the Concord Grape Butter, a hypnotic shade of deep purple, is both a fruity fall jam and butter coupled in one. And when you're out of bread, it's just as good spooned out of the jar and eaten straight-up, the flavors as intense as everything else served at Milk Bar.
