Sugar Rush: Macarons by bisous, ciao

Sugar Rush

Your daily dose of something sweet.

bisous, ciao is a minimalist shop, with only one sweet on the agenda: macarons. There are about 16 flavors offered at any given time, precisely arranged behind a glass case. These macarons are slightly larger than the ones from La Maison du Chocolat and Itzy Bitzy Patisserie (which still makes macarons on various occasion), and priced at $2.25 each. A recent visit had me going back for multiple servings of the Salted Caramel, the deep golden caramel smooth and flecked in French sea salt. Classics are available, too: dark chocolate, pistachio, and vanilla. But the more unusual flavors are certainly worth a detour. Like the Cherry (pictured above) with seeded sour cherry jam. I almost enjoyed the tart jam filling more than the macaron itself; it would have made an excellent pâte de fruit. There's also Masala Spiced Chai macarons and a Pecan Caramel.

Don't leave out the Jasmine + Green Tea Macaron, the surface flecked in jasmine petals, and the filling a white chocolate ganache infused with both green tea and jasmine. The macaron crusts are perfectly smooth and thin, though the meringue interior was a bit wet, hovering close to mushy on more than a few macarons. The filling to cookie ratio is skimpy on the filling side, but that's something that can easily (and hopefully!) be fixed. Overall? A very delicious welcome to our city's macaron scene, and with a constant rotation of flavors, I'll be back frequently.
