A Sandwich A Day: Italian Sausage & Ricotta from Defonte's

A Sandwich a Day

A new sandwich every day.

In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

The roast beef and mozzarella sandwich at Defonte's may be the classic order, but we were blown away by an Italian sausage and ricotta sandwich ($9.95)—juicy, crispy-edged rounds of sausage hugged by spicy sauteed broccoli rabe and a big mound of ricotta. Unlikely but delicious. Defonte's crusty bread is thick enough to absorb the juices from soft cheese, the spicy oil from the rabe, and the meaty sausage drippings without falling apart completely. It's not every roll that could take it, but theirs are more than up to the task.
