$7 buys a gorgeous and massive wedge of Strawberry Cake at Clinton Street Baking Co. on the Lower East Side. Three layers: two of extra-buttery vanilla cake, not unlike a poundcake, sandwich a third in which fresh strawberries are gently pureed into the batter, rendering that center layer a deep dark fruity red. There is vanilla buttercream in between, a modest brush speckled with cut strawberries and then strawberry buttercream encasing the cake's exterior. Simple flavors presented in an intense manner. Makes an incredible midnight dessert, particularly with whipped cream on the side.
