The Bomboloni ($2.25) from Levain Bakery are not fried. I didn't know what to make of that at first—can they even be called a bomboloni if they're baked? That's an issue to debate another day. But for now, this makes a rather swell breakfast treat.
A plush, sweet roll—similar to a dinner roll, only softer and with more sugar—is stuffed with fresh raspberry jam, tart enough to make you pucker. The only annoying part is the excess of flour on the roll's exterior. One bite and ploof, you're covered in white.
