Conveniently within walking distance of Serious Eats Headquarters, Macaron Cafe's quaint little storefront is truly charming. The menu items are written on a chalkboard in dainty handwriting, and the first thing you see upon entry is a huge pastry case filled with sixteen beautifully hued types of macarons. But we were after the Norvegian ($7.75), a sandwich filled with smoked salmon, cream cheese, capers, and herbs. A classic combination done right, the salmon was fresh and not overwhelmed by the herby cream cheese, and the capers added a briny bite but not enough to turn off the caper-averse. The Filone bread, as thick-sliced as it looks, was extremely light and airy—which allowed for the delicious ingredients to really shine. The sandwich tasted great, and was devoured quickly by the SE staff. (Generally a sign of excellence.)
