Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
When we first entered Kalustyan's, the other interns and I were a little overcome with glee. We spent several minutes wandering the aisles, mouths slightly agape—Boxed falafel mix? Different salts? Pickles of any variety? Anyway. Back to business.
After some confusion as to where exactly the sandwich counter was, we found our way upstairs and placed our order. A rather significant language barrier between us and the older, purposeful man behind the counter complicated the process a bit, but we managed to get our Mujadara sandwich in a timely fashion. The first thing we noticed was that the sandwich was heavy. When we unwrapped it back at HQ, we could see why—the pita pocket, lined with tahini and hot sauce, was stuffed to the brim with delicious, still toothsome lentils. Tomato and lettuce were present as well, both slightly warm and wilted from the residual heat, taking on the flavors of the lentils.
While this sandwich proved resistant to our attempts to cut into sharing-size pieces, we devoured it anyway, eventually resorting to using our fingers to lap up the scraps. This is a truly tasty, and truly hefty sandwich. For only $4.99, you get a mighty good lunch—and perhaps dinner, if you are of modest appetite.
