Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
When it comes to bánh mì, living within spitting distance of Ba Xuyên has spoiled me. Why bother with any other bánh mì places when I have arguably some of the city's best right around the corner? Well, that was my thinking before I sampled the House Special Bánh Mì ($3.75) at Thanh Da.
Located just off of Sunset Park's main drag, Thanh Da's signature sandwich sounds pretty similar to many other Vietnamese sandwiches: ham, pork roll, barbecue pork, pickled daikon and carrots, jalapeño, and cilantro all stuffed into a butter and mayo slathered toasted baguette. But it's the barbecued pork that sets this sandwich a notch or two above the rest. The pork is really thick slices of pork belly that could pass for the best bacon around. The edges are crispy and the meat is glazed with a sauce that is rich and sweet and soaks right into the bread. The vegetables in the sandwich are super crisp and fresh, and the jalapeños hot enough to make your eyes water. Served with a complimentary cold glass of oolong tea, this might just be one of the best lunch deals around.
