Tips and tricks for making the best sandwiches at home.
If you live in Astoria, you are no doubt familiar with BZ Grill. If you are not familiar, let this be an introduction to one of the best sandwiches in the city — if not the best gyro in New York.
BZ Grill's pork gyros are made from actual cuts of marinated pork—not one of those rotating logs of mystery meat. The cuts are placed overnight in a mixture of Greek spices before being stacked on a spit in the morning and loaded into the gyro cooker for their slow-motion merry-go-round ride.
The sandwiches I've had here have always been good, but if you come at the right time (between rushes), you'll get the best gyro you've ever had. That's because, in addition to the moist, tender meat from the interior of the stack, you'll be treated to slices that have spent enough time on the exterior of the spit to become extra crisp.
The resulting gyro sandwich ($5.97) is a pork-lover's dream—although it ostensibly includes lettuce, tomato, and onion (along with tzatziki sauce, of course), it's essentially a warm funnel of pita bread wrapped around a massive amount of the perfectly cooked meat.
In truth, it might actually be stretching it to call this thing a sandwich, since you may need a fork to make a dent in the gyro meat before you can pick it up. But I think you'll forgive me for sticking it in the Sandwich a Day series after you try it. Try to spy someone else's sandwich before you order, and if you think you'll have room, order an appetizer of grilled haloumi. (The Greek fries are good, too.)
BZ is a little out of the way if you don't live nearby, but if you find yourself off the Astoria Boulevard stop on the N/W train, make the walk west. You won't be sorry.
