In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.
What's on The Bomb ($7) at Sal, Kris, and Charlie's Deli in Astoria? Like the sign behind the counter says, everything.
No, seriously. Every. Damn. Thing. All on really great hero bread with a shatteringly crisp exterior and airy crumb (from Corona's Bakery Boys of New York). Ask one of the deli guys for specifics, and you better have time for the answer, because they will rattle off a list as long as your arm—which, coincidentally, is a good way to scale this sandwich for a photo.
The Bomb is about as long and thick as the forearms of the big guys who are the majority of the clientele here; your fellow patrons are likely to be cops, firefighters, and lineworkers from the nearby ConEd plant—working-class folks who appreciate a great deal and a good sandwich.
Hearty eaters could probably polish off a 12-inch Bomb in a single go, but nibblers could easily get two lunches out of it—think of it as a pair of $3.50 sandwiches. Not bad, eh? Lines are long at lunchtime, but the staff is fast and efficient and will get you out of there quick.
What? You really want to know what's on it? Short answer, all the Italian meats and all the American meats. Long answer: ham, turkey, salami, pepperoni, mortadella.... And three kinds of cheese (American, Swiss, provolone).... And lettuce, tomato, onion, and roasted peppers.... And dressing, mustard, and mayo.... And I'm probably still leaving out something.
With all those ingredients, subtlety is not the name of the game here. There's a reason I said "great deal and good sandwich" in that order. What you end up tasting on The Bomb is "meat," "cheese," and the marinated roasted peppers. If you're more interested in readily discernible flavors, take it easy and order your favorite combo of deli meat(s) and/or cheese(s). On bread this good, you can't go wrong.
