In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.
Everything you need to know about eating and cooking with curds
I've been reading about Mumbai Xpress's signature sandwich since Sarah DiGregorio wrote about it for the Voice last year. Described simply as a "grilled cheese with coriander chutney and onions," it sounded intriguing, though not necessarily worth a bus ride to the Nassau County border. After trekking out to Floral Park to try it I am here to say that Mumbai Xpress's signature sandwich is much, much more than a mere grilled cheese with a bit of chutney and onions, it is a work of edible art.
Just like the first time trying a banh mi, my initial experience with this triple-decker involved a culinary paradigm shift. In addition to crunchy raw onions and that psychedelically green-colored coriander chutney, there's a shmear of Amul butter and Amul cheese, and a layer of thinly sliced potatoes and green peppers. It's one of the tastiest sandwiches I've ever eaten, vegetarian or otherwise. I'm still kicking myself for splitting the $3.99 sandwich with my buddy. Next time, I'm ordering two.
