As the second-in-command at Murray's Cheese, Liz Thorpe really knows her stuff. In her new book The Cheese Chronicles, you'll find an ode to American-made cheese and all aspects of the industry. The Souperdouper Soup Kitchen Sandwich Special
Saturday, August 15, 1 to 4 p.m.
Get "souper" at t.b.d.'s outdoor garden for a soup and sandwich cook-off of epic proportions. If they win, cook-off entrants are asked to re-create their fabulous dish for the needy at the Greenpoint Soup Kitchen at a later date. There'll be plenty of food to sample, and a bike valet to boot. Proceeds will go toward the cost of ingredients for the winner’s meal, and any extra will be donated to the soup kitchen. While chef Myles Atherton (Hearth) churns out the "best damn BLTs this side of the Mississippi," sip on a Maker's Mark cocktail and listen to the DJs spin at Huckleberry Bar. An Argentine Affair

The first Argentine Affair promises to present "everything Argentinean," whether it be food, tango lessons, soccer matches, or wine. Held at the L.I.C. Water Taxi Beach, there will be food from La Esquina Criolla, Boca Juniors Steakhouse, Dulce de Leche Bakery, Pampas Argentinas, and many more. Tickets $35/person, $60/couple. Barbounia Tomato Festival

Even with the tomato blight, you can still enjoy tomatoes in all their glory at Barbounia's Tomato Festival. Executive Chef Efraim Nahon offers a three course prix-fixe menu featuring items like a homemade tomato almond lamb ravioli and a vine tomato ganache with vanilla ice cream.
