In February, Ed posted about Verē Chocolate, founded by Kathy Moskal. Kathy's chocolate factory right off Broadway on 27th Street (a two-minute walk from Shake Shack, I might add) is opened to the public Monday through Thursday from 12 to 5 p.m., and Fridays from 12 to 6 p.m.
Drop in during these hours for a little tasting of their house-made dark chocolate confections as well as a little history of Verē. Here you also have a chance to purchase from their full array of sweets, including their lines of dark chocolate bars, organic chocolate bars, caramels, and other chocolate snacks. My favorites, after the jump.
The Crunchy Stuff collection features three different snacks: the Coco Crisp Mix (crispy brown rice cereal, coconut chips and roasted pistachios), the So Good It's Nuts Mix (ginger and lime with crispy brown rice cereal and salt-roasted peanuts), and Pump'dcorn Mix, my favorite of the trio. Imagine clusters of caramelized popcorn enrobed in dark chocolate and spicy toasted pumpkin seeds. This one in particular pairs awesomely with generous scoops of Ronnybrook Dairy's vanilla ice cream.
Dark Chocolate Covered Brownies are akin to a single bite of flourless chocolate cake light coated in a thin, crackly dark chocolate shell.
Cinnamon + Pecan Chocolate Caramels are lush and light. Every bit is pure, clean, and to the point with the essence of fresh cream strongly shining through.
It surprises me that more people don't know about Verē's factory hours—the chocolate factory was empty the entire time I was there in the afternoon. A range of local shops carry her confections, though rarely can you find the entire line housed under one roof. And the best part? Kathy is as genuine as can be, and justly proud and passionate of her chocolates. She's also got a line of sweets for diabetics and vegan chocolates—there's something to suit all needs without sacrificing quality.
