Lula's Sweet Apothecary opened back in October, but aside from a mention in Super Vegan, this vegan dessert parlor has remained under the radar. Tucked away on 6th Street in the East Village, the shop was empty on chilly Friday evening, save for the charming owner and her partner.
Walls are lined with glass jars of toppings, and the counter is filled with brownies, cookies, and cupcakes. There's a soft serve machine at the back of the store, but take my word and pass on the all the former, because the focus here is vegan ice cream, and that is what you should be eating.
I am not a vegan by any manner or means; I love my butterfat and pork rinds like no other. But when something tastes good, it doesn't matter to me whether it's vegan, or organic, or whatnot. I'm open to all. The peanut butter fudge was an instant favorite--darkly intense, whipped frozen peanut butter streaked with chocolate fudge. My dining companion, a peanut butter fiend, was quick to love, remarking that it, "tastes like a lot, a lot of condensed peanut butter."
While I wasn't spooning away shares of her dessert, I devoured my dish of a chocolate coconut ice cream made with coconut milk. Slightly less rich than the peanut butter, but equally flavorful, I'm keeping my eye out on this shop. We sampled the flavors based on soy milk, which were less inspiring and luxurious than the nut and coconut milk based ones.
Prices start at $3.75 for a single scoop. Far from a bargain, but this seems to be the going rate for ice cream nowadays. Vegans will surely delight in Lula's, for we have our share of vegan bakeries (Cake Shop and Babycakes), and a plethora vegan friendly restaurants in the East Village/Lower East Side area.
But a vegan ice cream parlor? This is a first. Grab a seat at one of the bar stools and order your ice cream to stay. Between tall glass serving cups, flat metal spoons, and the cozy soda fountain atmosphere, you'd just might all your worries for a brief minute.
