Pumpkins were all over Serious Eats this week, and you better believe that they were all over the Greenmarket as well. As we say goodbye to tomatoes, and the eggplant hang on for a bit longer, we're also seeing amazing apples, radishes, rutabaga, sweet potatoes, and some oddballs (I'm looking at you, cardoons). Fall is approaching, but even as the winter squash begin to arrive, summer produce is still going strong at the market. We saw everything this week, including pears, pumpkins, tomatoes, eggplant, heirloom tomatoes, spiky cucumbers, pluots, black walnuts, and much more. Click through the slideshow for a closer look.

Hurricane Irene was easy on New York City, but outside the city things were much tougher. Vermont experienced tremendous flooding after the storm, as did southern New Jersey and upstate New York. A quick turn around NYC's Union Square Greenmarket this week made clear that the storm was indeed devastating to many farmers in the Northeast.

As August begins to wind down, it can start to feel like summer's over. If you find yourself in these doldrums, head to your local Greenmarket: it's positively bursting with peak season goodness, from tomatoes to corn to peaches and plums and more. Being in Union Square this week, it felt like we were just getting started.

This week it got hot in New York, and while it felt like full blown summer in the city, the market was there to remind us that it's spring. Still, summer—strawberries and all—is coming up fast. In addition to the early strawberries, green garlic was everywhere this week, as were asparagus, the last ramps, and other assorted goodies.

Okay, I think we can call it now:
it really looks like spring at the Greenmarket. As ramps prepare to make their exit—this could be their last week—asparagus, nettles, fiddleheads, edible flowers, and green garlic are all currently available at the market, among some less seasonal items, like fresh goat meat from Ardith Mae and maple cured kilebasa from Tamarack Hollow.
