Lunch Today: Good Vegan Cuisine at Wild Ginger

I've made my stance on faux meat pretty clear in the past (hint: I don't like it) and I've never been to a Pan Asian restaurant I've liked. This made my choice of Wild Ginger, a vegan, pro-faux restaurant serving such enticing-sounding dishes as General Tsao's Soy Protein and Tofu Teriyaki Sizzling Platter a little suspect. What was I thinking? Luckily, turns out that amidst all that nonsense, there are some actually tasty lunch options.

Behind The Scenes: Making Dim Sum At Nom Wah Tea Parlor

We're big fans of dim sum at Serious Eats and Nom Wah Tea Parlor, on Doyer Street in Manhattan's Chinatown, does not disappoint. Nom Wah has been serving up dim sum since the early 1920s, and many of the chefs working in the kitchen have been there for 30 years—they're masters at what they do. We spent a few hours in the kitchen with all the chefs to see how some of our favorite dim sum dishes were made.

Daily Veg: Flowering Chives with Duck at Great NY Noodletown

You can order Chinese flowering chives with beef, or duck, or any number of other meats at Great NY Noodletown. We're fond of the duck, but really, the reason to order is the green stuff. (How often do we say that when duck is involved?)

Daily Veg: Okra with Shrimp at Nyonya

It's pretty telling of Malaysian cuisine that "Shrimp With Lady Fingers" ($10.50) at Nyonya is listed under the "vegetable" section of the menu; shrimp is pretty much a guaranteed ingredient in most Malaysian vegetable dishes. But it is indeed a vegetable dish.

The Best Soup Dumplings In Chinatown, Manhattan

Finding the best Xiao Long Bao—the famed soup-filled dumplings from Shanghai—in New York has always been a pet project of mine, but it's not an easy goal to accomplish. Given the magnitude of the task, I decided to break it down into more manageable, walkable segments. For our first installment, I limited my search area to Manhattan's Chinatown.

First Look: Pulqueria, Chinatown's Underground Mexican Restaurant

Anyone else wishing that the whole "I'm not going to put a sign up, people can find me" trend that started with the speakeasy revivals and has seemed to have infiltrated the realm of restaurants would go away? I certainly did when I was trying to locate Pulqueria, a new high-end Mexican bar and restaurant on Chinatown's Doyers Street.

Lunch Today: Pan Fried Bean Curd at Shanghai Café

We've been on a tofu kick recently at Serious Eats. In its pure form, sure, refreshing and virtuous. But we've got no problem loading it down with meat and oil, either.

Sugar Rush: Coconut Pudding at Red Egg

Red Egg has a fairly large dessert menu for a Chinese restaurant. Think fried green tea rice balls, red bean pudding, a spicy ginger crème brûlée, and more traditional sweets like sesame mochi balls and steamed milk and egg custard. All these desserts are portioned for one, with the exception of the Coconut Pudding ($8).
