A Sandwich a Day: Spicy Blue at Shelsky's

Smith Street smoked fish emporium Shelsky's has plenty of appetizing sandwich options, but, for me, it's hard to imagine ordering anything other than the Spicy Blue ($11).

First Look: Shelsky's Smoked Fish Shop in Carroll Gardens

The new smoked fish shop Shelsky's is making Carroll Gardens feel a little more Lower East Side-y. "No more schlepping," says their website. Owner Peter Shelsky, an Eleven Madison Park alum, is saving the neighborhood a trip over the bridge to Russ and Daughters for their dose of smoked, cured, and pickled fishies.

The Brunch Dish: Burger and Bloody Mary Deal at Apartment 138

It's easy to stroll right by this Boerum Hill all-day-open restaurant without realizing they have an awesome $12 brunch deal, which includes both an entrée and drink. Like Cheerwine, for which they drive down to North Carolina to pick up crates of the real cane-sugar version. The fridge also stocks cans of Vernors ginger ale, glass bottles of Bubble Up, and Kombucha.

A Sandwich A Day: 'Famous Steak Sub' from The Wing Bar

Not unlike a cheesesteak on different bread, it's got thin ribbons of steak cooked on a griddle with a mighty, mighty helping of onions, all covered with cheese and topped with a lid so everything steams and melts together in the heat.

Mix It Up: The Negroni at Chestnut

Sometimes, just a tiny tweak to a classic gives it a little boost. Chestnut, on Smith Street in Carroll Gardens, has long been a favorite of mine on the food front, with a reasonably priced menu featuring seasonal food primarily...

Sugar Rush: Bee Stings at Sweet Melissa

[Photo: Kathy YL Chan] Only on the weekends, Sweet Melissa Patisserie turns out Bee Stings for $3.50 apiece. Think golden rounds of brioche dough, baked and filled with a cool vanilla pastry cream. Top halves are dipped in a...
