"This is my idea of perfect brunch food," said Dan Kluger of ABC Kitchen at the New York Culinary Experience on Saturday. We can get on board with the enthusiasm. Come see how chef Kluger makes his ricotta, and how he makes a baked tomato-egg brunch dish that shows it off. More
One of the best parts about vegetables is how their natural sweetness comes out when they're cooked well; and no vegetable does this as brilliantly as squash. I can't think of anything I'd rather eat in the middle of winter than a heaping bowl of perfectly roasted butternut, enlivened by nothing more than olive oil and salt. But chefs around New York get more creative than that, of course, featuring squash in everything from curries to crostini to queso fundido. Here are eight squash dishes we love from around the city. What are your favorites? More
At ABC Kitchen, Jean-Georges Vongerichten's locavore-minded Union Square restaurant, chef Dan Kluger does excellent things with pasta and seafood and crudo—but this isn't Crudo Month, is it? And that's fine, because I'd happily eat nothing but ABC's vegetable dishes for the rest of my days. Come see what's on the menu this winter. More
Sure, we'd be happy eating heirloom tomatoes with nothing but a sprinkle of salt or a slather of mayo this time of year. But how are New York's chefs celebrating tomato season? Here are some of our favorite tomato dishes across the city right now. Get 'em while they're here! More
The Hudson Valley is that beautiful, expansive chunk of land along the Hudson River that's home to many farms, some of which are represented at New York City's Greenmarket. The farmers trek into the city with their cherries, beets, goat cheese, and many other fresh goodies piled onto flatbeds to sell at farmers' markets and to some restaurants. We recently road-tripped with ABC Kitchen chef Dan Kluger, to meet some of the farmers that supply his ingredients. Here are snapshots of the goat cheese, squash blossoms, whiskey, radishes, and more from our day of cruising around in tractors (and convertibles). More
Monday's New York edition of Taste of the Nation proved to be an epic meal. The highlights among the savory dishes included an insanely rich Spanish mackerel crudo from the Union Square Cafe, a cup of creamy stracciatella with sea urchin, caviar, and nasturtium granita from Roberta's, and a suckling pig croqueta from Bar Basque that came with a dropper of salsa verde and a slow cooked quail egg. At $2 each, cookies from ABC Kitchen may be one of the best finds from a restaurant where the food is great but the prices aren't quite friendly for everyday visits. More
Maybe this endless winter is kicking our morning carb cravings into overdrive; or maybe we've just had so many early meetings, we've grabbed breakfast treats from all over. Either way, life at Serious Eats of late has been one great muffin after another. Here are some of the best muffins in NYC we've had recently; what are your favorites in the city? More
It's been quite a year for restaurants in New York. In fact, though it's hard to believe, some of my very favorite spots in the city have opened their doors within the last year. And others just came to our attention in the last twelve months, reminding us how very much exists in the world of New York restaurants. Here's a recap of my favorite eight reviews this year. More
