Earlier this year, pastry chef Katie Rosenhouse, who has worked in some of New York's finest kitchens and has made several appearances on food TV, opened Buttermilk Bakeshop in Park Slope. The space is small, but she packs in a huge variety of items from macarons and cupcakes to whoopee pies and housemade ice cream. The following three items alone make Buttermilk Bakeshop a destination worth visiting.
Nutella Lovebites ($2.50) have a rich dark chocolate flavor that's punctuated by a generous dollop of chocolate hazelnut spread that amps up the sweetness. The cookie's texture is soft throughout with a finely ground crumb, similar to a flourless chocolate cookie. A touch of sea salt on top adds a savory note.
The fun-to-look-at (and fun to eat) pineapple Coco Snowball ($3.50) does well to evoke the Hostess version. It's a vanilla cake filled with pineapple and coated in marshmallow coconut frosting. The vanilla cake is dense and moist, almost like an upside down cake, and the pineapple core adds some tanginess to balance the sweet frosting. Dig deep with a fork to get all three elements in one bite.
My favorite offering from Buttermilk is their crushingly delicious Chocolate Bread Pudding ($2.75). Although it's made with croissants and chunks of high end chocolate, it never gets bogged down with sweetness or heaviness. It's chocolatey and crisp on the edges, and every spoonful is a pleasure. It's toasted chocolate croissants by the spoonful—who doesn't want to eat that?
There's no seating in the bakery, but two benches outside give you a spot to enjoy your treats.
