One of the best black and white cookies I've had this year didn't come from a 100-year-old bakery or a famous Lower East Side institution. It came from Dishes, the upscale sandwich shop and salad bar in Midtown East.
Dishes' own Black and White Cookie ($2.50) features a standard glaze that's dry to the touch but delightfully soft when you bite into it. You can easily distinguish between the chocolate and vanilla halves, and as you'd expect, the chocolate is super sweet rather than dark.
The cookie base is soft but not to the point of crumbly cake, a style that's popular among some and blasphemous to others. The crumb also has a hint of lemon flavor.
As with all black and whites, the key is to eat them fresh, and these satisfying cookies are fresh enough to be a winner.
