Park Slope's Best Ice Cream Shop Makes Great Cake, Too
Italian import L'Albero dei Gelati may best be known for its ice cream, but it's really a full-service cheese and sweets shop, and if you're getting some of their excellent gelato, an order of cake shouldn't come too far behind.
The Italian-style cakes aren't like lofty, neat-crumbed American layer cakes. These derive most of their lift from eggs and are dense and crumbly with crackly, un-iced tops.
Selections of cakes (about $6 a slice) change frequently, but look out for the Cuor di Chocolato, a double-chocolate cake darkened with cocoa powder and filled with a thick spread of extra-dark ganache. Also of note is a chocolate-studded cake filled with soft pear, which is elegant, not too sweet, and just subtle enough to go well with a scoop of hazelnut gelato.
