In the winter with the garage door rolled down, Momo Sushi Shack's windowless, unsigned facade looks like some kind of urban duck hunting blind. Inside there are communal tables and an eclectic mix of music from Radiohead and golden oldies. As for the food, it's best known for its pork belly and "sushi bombs." With a menu like that you may think dessert would be an afterthought, but you'd be wrong.
The Chocolate Mouse ($8) is perhaps the perfect complement to a savory sushi dinner. It's milk chocolate-based and very sweet, just the thing after lots of salt. The texture of the mousse, which also contains bits of chocolate, is light, airy and very smooth, and its sweetness is balanced out in two ways. First, there's a labor-intensive and slightly tart red wine reduction. Second, orange slices add acidity and in-house candied ginger adds spice.
Make sure to ask your server what desserts they have—and don't skip it!
