I love it when someone takes a simple, well-liked product and elevates it to the next level without messing with what works. And if it's a local small business, all the better. Take dark chocolate covered pretzels. This winning salty-sweet combination has been popular for years, and you can certainly buy some pretty decent (if a bit sweet) versions from any number of places in New York. Fairway, Zabar's and even Trader Joe's come to mind.

But the large, hand dipped, Pennsylvania Dutch style, Dark Chocolate Covered Pretzels ($2) from Roni-Sue's Chocolates are something special. Even though they're a simple treat, Roni-Sue's manages to improve upon both the chocolate coating and the pretzel.

For the base, Roni-Sue's uses an excellent crunchy Martin's pretzel, which Ed once measured against standard pretzels by saying it's like "comparing a BMW to a Yugo." The pretzels don't lose any of their fantastic crunchiness after being dipped in dark chocolate.

The single origin dark chocolate is fresh and complex, with a little fruit flavor. A thin drizzle of white chocolate fancies up the presentation, making them suitable for dessert after a nice dinner.
