The Vendy Awards, New York's annual celebration of street food, are hitting Sunset Park this weekend. Until then we'll be taking a look at the finalists in their rookie category—new vendors who started cooking on the street just this year. Next up: Nuchas Empanadas.
Years ago, on a trip home to Buenos Aires, owner Ariel Barbouth found inspiration for Nuchas in the empanadas that are ubiquitous there but largely absent downtown. He launched the first Kiosk in Times Square in 2011 and last summer took the show on the road with the Nuchas truck. Through it, he serves many varieties of hand-held snacks, including empanadas filled with short rib, shiitake curry, or seafood.
On a recent visit to the truck, Ariel and his team demonstrated the process of making empanadas for me. Take a look at the slideshow to get an idea of what Nuchas is all about, and stay tuned for more Vendy coverage this week. You can see all the finalists and buy tickets on the Vendy website.
