GalleryWhat to Cook with Locust Grove's Phenomenal Peaches and Plums at the Union Square Greenmarket
It's not news that local, in-season fruit is pretty much always tastier than the year-round stuff at the supermarket. But the flavor of the peaches and plums currently available at the Greenmarket is practically mindblowing. And the variety, courtesy of farms like my personal favorite for stone fruit, Locust Grove Fruit Farm, surprises even market regulars like myself.
They sell white and yellow peaches, yes, but also elephant hearts, green gages, and adorable little geneva mirabelle plums. Locust Grove isn't the only farm at the market with a variety of stone fruit, not even close. You can see and smell them everywhere you turn in Union Square on market days. But to my mind, they've got the best selection, so I decided to spotlight their ample offerings here.
Take a look at the slideshow to see all the peaches, nectarines, and more varieties of plums than you even knew existed. And don't wait to head to the market—these beauties won't be around for too much longer. While you're there, you'll notice just about everything else is in season, so save room for corn, tomatoes, basil, eggplant, hot and sweet peppers, and a whole lot more, including the first apples of the oncoming fall.
