Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream has been available in New York by the pint for some time now. But on a recent trip to Murray's Cheese (which sells all kinds of great sweets with their cheese and sandwiches) I noticed a Jeni's product that was new to me: a Macaroon [sic] Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich ($7.95). I bought one with hazelnuts and dark chocolate ice cream.
The hand-piped macaron cookies are made from hazelnut flour instead of the usual almond flour, and the dark chocolate ice cream is coated with roasted and salted hazelnuts.
As with standard macarons, the cookie shells only have a mild nut flavor. Their texture is more chewy than crunchy since they've been frozen along with the ice cream. I love how the creamy, ultra-dark chocolate ice cream pairs with the salted hazelnuts. If you enjoy salty-sweet flavor combinations (salted caramel, sea salt on your dark chocolate, etc.) you will love this ice cream sandwich.
I have since tried another Jeni's ice cream sandwich with oatmeal cookies and vanilla ice cream. Out of the two, I prefer the stronger flavor profiles of the salted hazelnut with dark chocolate ice cream, but your mileage may vary.
In addition to the West Village Murray's, the sandwiches are also available at New York Dean & Deluca locations.
