In the last few years there's been a proliferation of shops specializing in only one sweet. Some crashed and burned hard like Dolce, who featured variations of Tiramisu. Others, like Rice To Riches (rice puddings), have withstood the test of time and defied the skeptics. The truth is, it's almost impossible to predict what's going to be successful these days.
That's why you should view the Treat House with an open mind. They offer over a dozen varieties of mostly gluten-free, rice crispy treats. They also have a small selection of house-made marshmallows.
Before visiting, one of my biggest concerns was how Treat House would properly distinguish their different flavors given that the overall experience of a rice crispy treat is mostly defined by tooth-aching sweetness.
Treat House does an admirable job in this area thanks in part to pastry chef Wendy Israel's assistance. My favorite treat, the peanut butter and chocolate, has a nice strong peanut butter flavor and a half peanut butter cup on top. The raspberry chocolate has a thin layer of raspberry marshmallow on top that made it fun to eat. It also had at least one real raspberry inside. The salted caramel also sports a layer of caramel flavored marshmallow on top but it's not as salty as the peanut butter chocolate. The chocolate pretzel flavor benefits from the pretzel's salt.
All the treats are densely packed. These aren't the kind of rice crispy treats, as you sometimes see at bake sales, that you can bend or stretch before eating. They are also—and let me be blunt—very, very sweet. There's just no getting around this. If you prefer your chocolate very dark or prefer low-sweetness desserts, my guess is these will be too sweet for you. But if you want to feel like kid again for a few minutes, try one and sit on the swing in the back of the store and pretend you're at summer camp.
Prices run $2.50 for one piece, $8 for four pieces and $22 for 12 pieces. So the Treat House is on the pricy side. But this in Manhattan where six mini doughnuts cost $5 and a frozen s'more costs $7. Too rich for your tastes? You can always travel to Flushing and get eight whole custard tarts for $7.50.
