The first thing I noticed after entering Toulousaine Bakery was the number of regulars chatting with the staff in both in French and in English. It's usually a good omen to see repeat customers—especially locals—coming back for something. One had just placed an order for a raspberry croissant, and who am I to argue with the regulars?

The croissant ($3) is a good deal given its large size. The jam tastes ripe and concentrated, like it's been reducing on the stove for a while, and the croissant's exterior is a crisp brown—there's a satisfying but subtle crunch when you bite through the outermost layer. The many inner layers are moist and buttery, with fewer crisp flakes. Topping it all off is a dusting of confectioner's sugar , that, when combined with the filling, make this a very sweet affair.

Toulousaine also makes chocolate and almond croissant. We'll be back.
