This week on Ask the Critic: a romantic date night for a visitor.

Date Night: Romantic Restaurants

My partner and I will be in NY July 13 through 15. Can you give me a recommendation for a romantic dinner? Both of us are foodies and adventurous and will try anything. Thanks!

I can't think of a more romantic restaurant than Zenkichi in Williamsburg. Walk up to the hostess stand and you'll be led up to a screened-in table within a triple-decker labyrinth of a restaurant. The waitress comes by only when you press a button. Your booth is yours, until you're brought the first course of a many-course omakase—each course better than the last, pristine hamachi tartar preceding masterful tempura, and so on from there, through to the black sesame custard at the end.

Or: Manhattan? There's Buvette, one of the more charming restaurants I've ever encountered: a sliver of a restaurant in the West Village, equally wonderful for tartines and cappuccinos in the morning, midday croques-monsieur, or epic nighttime tastings. I had a recent 1 a.m. date there with bottles of rosé, thinly sliced leg of lamb, terrine de campagne, cauliflower gratin, and memorable cheeses (I'm still thinking about the Riley's Coat raw goat milk from Vermont). Save room for any dessert topped with clouds of whipped cream.

Any Advice?
