Forager's market (in DUMBO and Chelsea) carry an unusually eclectic selection of sweet baked goods. Instead of ordering everything in the same category from one bakery, Forager's chose three or four best-in-class suppliers and receives deliveries from all of them. For example, they carry doughnuts from Dough, muffins from Blue Sky Bakery, scones from Ovenly, and until recently, croissants and pain au chocolat from Balthazar—a pretty high quality group.

However, last week I noticed they swapped out Balthazar for their own housemade croissants and pain au chocolat, and Ovenly's scones for their own (they still carry cannel├ęs from Balthazar).

The croissants were small but very good. Using criteria from the SENY best croissant in New York competition, they stood up well with good crust structure and plenty of buttery layers without being soggy.

In the case of Forager's pain au chocolat, the small size works in their favor, since I always find them a bit more filling. The thin vein of chocolate running through the croissant was pleasingly dark and just bitter enough—a little bit seemed to go a long way.

If you're looking for something larger, you will not be disappointed with Forager's large cranberry scone. They're well-baked with a thin crust and plenty of plump dried cranberries; they have a dense but still crumbly interior.
