Slideshow SLIDESHOW: Our 30 Favorite Bites from Taste of the Nation

There's nothing like having some of the best food and drink talent together under one ceiling for a good cause to remind you how lucky you are to live (and eat) in the city that is New York.

Last night some of the New York food world's top chefs gathered for Share Our Strength's Taste of the Nation, chaired by Alex Guarnaschelli and Landmarc's Marc Murphy. Marc shared with us of the event, "For me this is two-fold. I'm a chef and a father. And I'm on a television show, so it would be wrong of me not to raise awareness by participating in this. As a chef I can't imagine children being hungry, and having some kind of notoriety if I can get the word out and help I'm going to do that. If I can help one kid have more healthy food, I'm there."

At 82 Mercer, home to last week's Taste of the Lower East Side and a long roster of Wine and Food Festival events, table after table fed and boozed up a packed crowd from all walks of life. Chefs mingled, nabbing cocktails and plates from their cohorts, and by the end of the evening a warm, buzzed mood had heads bobbing.

Some of our Serious Eats loves were in attendance—Amada Cohen of Dirt Candy with her tomato-y take on a decadent-filled fruit rollup, the Meatball Shop's Daniel Holzman and Michael Chernow with a big ball o pizza, the polenta from Gabe Thompson that has us weak in the knees, George Mendes and his "everything the light touches" approach to vegetables, a perfectly smoked piece of swordfish from A Voce's Missy Robbins, and a curious plate from Atera's Matt Lightnter that we could have eaten for hours.
