The best bakeries, I think, are the ones that slam you with butter when you open the front door. Artopolis certainly does, and they make some great buttery things, but one of my favorite sweets there doesn't have any dairy at all. Or eggs. As the description on the display case reads, the Melomakarona ($15/pound, about 16 cookies) "happen to be vegan as well."

They're moist and delicate honey-orange cookies spiced with cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Ground walnuts give them a sandy texture and help tone down the cookies' considerable sweetness. They're the perfect thing with a cup of Artopolis's strong coffee, and a vegan dessert unlike any I know of in town.
