Sugar Rush: Chocolate Almond Croissant at Patisserie des Ambassades
In a span of only two blocks between 116th and 118th streets on Fredrick Douglas Boulevard in Harlem, there are three bakeries worthy of a special trip. I've written about Lee Lee's rugelach, and most people are familiar with Levain Bakery's popular chocolate chip cookies ,but if you live uptown and haven't tried the chocolate almond croissant from Patisserie des Ambassades, you are missing out.
It's slightly smaller than, say, a Payard almond croissant but with a similar high-quality dark chocolate inside and a generous coating of slivered almonds on top. These have a distinctive crunch that reminds me of biting into the filo layers of a good baklava. As the photos indicate, this is also a slightly denser croissant—if you are looking for huge fluffy layers of dough, you might be disappointed.
I picked one up at 1 p.m. and it tasted fine, but I recommend going early for the freshest product.
