The time-tested, tried and true torta ingredients triumph yet again at Taqueria Lower East Side on their Bistec Torta ($6.25). Fatty avocado adds richness that's balanced by spicy jalapeno and crisp slices of iceberg. Like the carnitas torta, a light Portuguese roll absorbs any juice from the ingredients within and gets better with every bite.

Well-seasoned hanger steak is roasted and chopped into bite size pieces for the bistec. They're kept in place by a smear of beans, whose starch acts like glue and helps keep the tender chunks of steak from falling out every time you lift it to take a bite. For now, we could do without the tomato, but we can't do without another torta from Taqueria for very long.
