When you're visiting a 24 hour doughnut shop that isn't making its doughnuts fresh around the clock, the question come late night isn't "what doughnut do I want?" It's "what doughnut stales the best?" Donut Pub's Honey Dip ($1.10) seems to fare better in this regard than its cousins.
The yeast doughnut gets a sugary glaze with, if not a burst of honey flavor, a definite suggestion. But more than the honey itself is the amplified sweetness it carries, and the syrupy texture the crisp glaze takes on as it dissolves. It's a doughnut that's legitimately mouthwatering, even after it stales and dries out a bit, and I'd guess all that salivation makes it taste more tender than it actually is. But I'm quite alright with that, especially after midnight.
