There are many sweet wonders to choose from at the newly opened Breads Bakery in Union Square. But we'll start with the Chocolate-Halva Rose. It's baked in a loaf ($9.95), five roses neatly tucked in and finished with a syrup glaze. Pull one apart and start unwinding. The dough is like a cross between danish and brioche with nuggets of dark chocolate buried in every bite and bits of sesame halva that has all but melted into the folds.
It's reminiscent of the Chocolate Rose from Zucker Bakery (they also make a Date Halva one), but those are more restrained while this is flat out wild and buttery from start to finish.
While you're there, pick up a handful of the Chocolate Rugelach. Supremely flaky and an easy contender for one of the best in town. They're only $1.50 apiece, each about two bites.
