A Sandwich a Day: Carnitas Torta at Taqueria Lower East Side

A Sandwich a Day

A new sandwich every day.

In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.

The décor theme at Taqueria Lower East Side may be '80s hair bands, but the theme for the Carnitas Torta ($6.25) is juicy, meaty fun. Slow roasted pork caramelizes in the oven and gets packed into a dense patty for this sandwich. The firm packing helps keep all the juice trapped in the fibers of finely shredded pork, and when you bite into it, you get that rush of flavor and oil we love in a good torta. A thin Portuguese roll from Santos Bakery will absorb whatever your mouth doesn't.

By the time you get to the end of the sandwich (a minute and a half in our case), the bread will have soaked up all things greasy that try to escape. Beans, mayo, and avocado make for a rich, weighty lunch, but pickled jalapenos add a spicy tartness that cuts through it all, and iceberg provides a bright crunch to lighten up all the pig.
