A Sandwich a Day: Pambazo Torta at El Mariachi
In this great city of ours, one could eat a different sandwich every day of the year—so that's what we'll do. Here's A Sandwich a Day, our daily look at sandwiches around New York. Got a sandwich we should check out? Let us know. —The Mgmt.
There's nothing subtle about a potato and chorizo sandwich on a bun painted with chili sauce. But damn does it satisfy.
The Pambazo ($8) at Astoria's El Mariachi is reminiscent of the Xochimilco rendition in Brooklyn, but with potatoes that have spent some time getting to know the griddle. Their crisp, almost burnt crusts are what make this sandwich special, along with knobby chunks of just as crisped-up chorizo. They're joined by some cool lettuce and crema on a soft sweet bun that's drenched in a mild chili sauce—use your hands at your own peril.
